The Rule of Thirds

My friend Amy, from when I lived in Maryland, has started an online photography class. If you have read any of my previous posts, you'll notice one of the goals I have had is to take a photography class. This is probably the closest I will get to a photography class in the near future, so here I go!

The first assignment was to take pictures that correlate with The Rule of Thirds. As Amy wrote on her blog (originally taken from Wikipedia), "The Rule of Thirds states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. (Thanks Wikipedia for that definition.)"

Because I am so new to photography, I was confused quite a bit as to what The Rule of Thirds really means. Once again, I felt inadequate to complete something and I almost didn't! But, as I reflected on my goals again, I realized that I would not be the person I am today if I didn't fail at times. So... here is my take on The Rule of Thirds!

  1. You pictures don't reflect confusion. Good use of the rule of thirds! I especially like the one of M in the snow. The color/contrast is great!

I'm so excited that you're doing the Photography Class! I think it'll be loads more fun than continuing education classes at the community college :-)

  2. Nice shots! Love that second one in particular. I like that you can see what she's doing and that completes the frame. The first one is the same way.. you have space for what she's looking at. Nice! :) (And I found that I am REALLY bad at this rule, btw)

  3. Thanks Amy & Jen!

I am so excited about this class and what I can learn! I love the depth of information you have given, Amy! I may not understand it all yet, but someday hopefully soon I will have an aha moment with it all! This is definitely less intimidating than going TO a class in person! I still am thinking of taking a class at Wolf Camera, just so someone can teach me about all of the settings and really show me what they mean... unless you plan on going to that length! hint...hint... ;)
